Are humans the only creatures that are afraid of the dark? Animals seem to love it. When I was little I turned on my torch as soon as the bedroom light was switched off so I could keep reading and delay the terrors of the night.
The crafty hands that sewed with such precision
the cloth around the cage now close it fast
and darkness ends the singing of the day
In fun-splashed bathroom bark and wag are stilled
by towel that’s draped across excited eyes
Night falls and in the safety of the gloom,
friends fox and mole awaken from their fear
While in my bed adventure book in hand
I dread the tread upon the stairs that means
the loss of light foreshadowing my dreams
