The Night
Everyone knows that when it gets dark
And lightning bolts light up the sky
While the cats howl, and know one knows why
Their dog has started to bark
It was on such a night, our hero was left
Inside of the pub, with no taxi fare
The blustery wind, made every thing creak
It wasn’t a night for the meek
Let’s be having you
The barman did whine
Off to your beds
So I can have mine
Haway man Bill, cos Bill was his name
Can’t I stay here, and keep out the rain
Does this place have a sign that has the word Inn
There is no place here for you, let your travels begin
The door slammed behind him
More lightning did flash
Sobering thoughts in his mind
The driest way home, he would have to find
And somewhere to go for a slash
Just in case….
During the daylight, the subways were used
Nobody threatened, nobody abused
There was no reason, to get up and roam
The cycle track was the fastest way home
Flashes and rumbles disturbing the night
The mist in the subway, just didn’t feel right
But convinced by the time that the subway route saved
He would tackle the mist, in his heart he was brave
From the depths of the subway there came
Grumbles and growls and the occasional flame
The world filled with howling and wails
Maybe the old wives told of the truth
Dragon life, no longer needed proof
That was the last time that Benny was seen
By a woman out walking her dog
All she could say, were her last to him
To stay away from the fog
Crunch, crunch.
The Day
The sky was not orange, but a very dark grey
Not very inviting, what more can I say
The foghorns had blasted, their song through the night
Wary sailors watching, for the houses of light
Was the Sun rising, reviving the Toon
Or were we still living by the light of the moon
Throaty bus engines were beginning to roar
The early bird workers, are opening their doors
Morning to Janice, likewise to Joe
Like it or not, to work they must go
But Bill he returns, a shift through the night
Redistributing wealth, through another’s window
Sirens were bleating, but that’s nothing new
They have blocked off the subway, oh what a tadoo
Can we get through? Nobody could
There in the subway, a deep pool of blood
Crunch, Crunch!
The Twist
The body, it was never found, because he was abroad
Our hero is in luxury, spending the Dragons horde
Telling all and sundry, and always with a grin
Despite rumours to the contrary,…..
Dragons don’t always win…..
Nice job fellah!
Brilliant -reminds me of Burns' a modern day Tam o' Shanter. Thank you.
Three cheers for Colven. Unique and entertaining. Thanks for sharing your world with us.
