Owl Entrée
From quill to kill
in sweepstake thrill,
claw talon spike
in skin-pierce strike,
flight banking over strata flanks
of wheaten grain blades,
beige laid sky,
oatmeal for rodents, stubble, chaff.
Turning Leaves
Autumn twist, book turning leaves,
couched low, cup at lip,
wright reading, transforms my sight.
Outside green turns yellow, red,
dead brown come to life,
dry scraping brush will sound.
Volumes call from bowing shelves,
season’s cycle, nestle, turning leaves.
Swell
As even breeze moves parachutes,
copters spiral down from trees
tidings washing palm nut rafts -
long live the dead, unison,
for cycled seed renews itself.
Kernels wherein gene life celled,
core of morrow’s growth restored -
sun up; now is swell.
Blush
Juicy packs need friends about,
with laughter dripping, dripping mash,
strands and stringy orange pulp,
sip slipware sliding uncontrolled.
It's no wonder there’s blush,
hard stone hidden, brown, gold;
ways eating mango - cold and
frothy, mush-filled lassi glass.
Sum Flower
Agèd saint, facing east, prays,
sun-dried, bees, full pollen days,
from central disc, outer rays,
mystic maths laid, fulfilled blaze,
fruit in Fibonacci ways,
Fermat’s spiral interplays,
golden ratio displays,
anointing oil, final phase.
The sunflower is not only my favourite flower but also a quite useful one. Beautifully described! Love how the poems in few words still point out the complexity and beautiful richness of everything alive.
My choice here is Blush - I particularly like the second line with the two uses of dripping. The whole poem is juicy and delicious to read out loud
I think I'll go for "Swell" There's nothing new under the sun, life just goes around and around. Well that's the thought it put into my head. AS I think I said to another one of your posts Stephen' really starting to enjoy, and trying to absorb, your work
Particularly like Sum Flower- very clever. Makes me ponder on the geometric patterns seen in nature
Owl Entree is my favourite, I like it's rhythm and especially the first four lines which really grab your attention. My next favourite is Sum Flower, what a great subject for a poem and this is very clever. I like the interplay of religion and science/mathematics, ' mystic maths' (although maths always was bit of a mystery to me). You have also managed to capture both the beauty of science and art in one poem whilst delivering the meditative calm of prayer. I've changed my mind 'Sum Flower is my favourite and I used to love teaching children about the Fibonacci sequence, so there is some sentimentality there as well.
