I’ve been eating a lot of salad lately…..
The salad bowl green leaf handicap chase
All the runners are in the fridge, and ready to go,
The fridge door opens…
And they’re off,
Crisphead lettuce takes an early lead,
closely followed by Little Gem, but then
Butterhead comes up on the outside and overtakes the both of them,
and coming through the pack now and starting to show,
here comes an Italian chicory, Radicchio.
Mache or lambs lettuce ,
now edges into the lead,
but it’s quickly overtaken by the housewife’s favourite ,
an M&S selection of mixed green leaves, ….
oh no ,hang on ,it’s almost empty when we look inside,
and as a result it’s disqualified and
looking rather limp, at the back in last place is……
one of the lesser known Speckled lettuces .
But now the bookies favourite is making a surge,
from the bottom of the drawer , here comes an Iceberg,
It’s neck and neck with an Escarole,
with just a few more seconds left to go.
Then bursting through the pack now here comes a Cos,
I don’t think anyone can stop it?
only for Arugula to force it’s way into the lead, it’s going like a rocket,
(That’s the one I tipped to be the winner and end up in the salad spinner)
but wait , here comes Little Gem again and it’s overtaking the two of them,
then from out of nowhere , to win it by a whisker,
from right at the back of the salad crisper ,
all of them are just beaten at the finish
by a bag of pre washed loose leaf spinach.
I don’t think any of us saw that coming.

More vinaigrette than vignette! The cream of salad poetry.
Very clever, both poem and comments. Enjoyed them all.
