An Ode To My Tummy

Writer: Alison BlevinsAlison Blevins

following our workshop on odes I was inspired to write this...

I have a little tummy

it sticks out quite a bit

I used to really hate it

when I looked at it.

I always felt self conscious

and tried to suck it in

hoping no one would notice

and wishing I was thin.

But now I am much older

I’ve come to realise

I did not appreciate my tummy

nor its lack of size

because now it’s not so little,

its more of a bulgy belly -

plus its very soft and squishy,

and it wobbles like a jelly.

But I am also so much wiser

and know how helpful it can be

for it protected both my babies

whilst they lived inside of me

and the fact its soft and squishy

is really just the norm,

it’s a beautiful wee belly

and I should appreciate its form.

So I will no longer shun my tummy,

suck it in, or cover up  -

but enjoy it in its glory

and shower it with love.

Belly dancers - highly prized! Alice and Paulette cover the gist, I'll add the simple rhyme scheme, or rhyme in general , for, me is very effective. Men can also change shape, I currently would describe myself as looking like I've swallowed a Space-hopper!

Shows good self-esteem to accept your body as it is. Good work!!

Your ode to your tummy covers all of the life cycles. Worth sharing it with everyone, not just Parkies. I enjoyed it very much.
