A bit of traditional rhyme in here along with my own
A soul-cake! A soul-cake! Please good Missus, a soul-cake! Apple or pear, plum or cherry, Any good thing to make us all merry.
That’s the song the children sang
Back when Halloween began
No batman masks or shop bought sweets
But still they ran around the streets
A soul-cake! A soul-cake! Please good Missus, a soul-cake! One for Peter, two for Paul Three for Him who made us all.
A group would knock upon your door
With prayers for those who’d gone before
They never threatened trick or treat
for biscuits made with spices sweet
A soul-cake! A soul-cake! Please good Missus, a soul-cake! We’ll say a prayer for you and yours
And all the food inside your stores With turnip lanterns, fire and song
The children made a merry throng
As through the village they’d parade
And apple bobbing games were played
A soul-cake! A soul-cake! Please good Missus, a soul-cake! And if you fetch a mug of beer
We won’t come souling till next year
Nice take, got the olde day tin goin down real sweet!
I enjoyed listening to this very much at the Open Mic, Martin. Both simple and clever at the same time.
